Scholarships

In addition to need-based financial aid, we urge you to seek scholarships to support study abroad. EMU's Office of Academic Programs Abroad has information in its study abroad library about scholarships and grants for overseas study. You may visit the study abroad library in 103 Boone Hall anytime between 8:30 a.m. - 4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday. Several study abroad scholarships are listed below. Individual study abroad programs may also offer scholarships.

Other potential funding sources you can investigate include local professional organizations, corporate sponsors, and churches. Use your contacts (family, friends, etc.) and your imagination to discover funding!


The Emanuel Fenz Cultural History Tour Scholarship (.pdf file)

This scholarship is offered to participants in EMU's Cultural History Tours and Adventures Abroad Programs. These unique study abroad programs allow students to earn up to 12 credit hours in history, art, and literature while seeing the major cities and sites of Europe. The scholarship may be awarded to more than one student, but is non-renewable. The scholarship is open to EMU students of any major who have sophomore, junior, or senior status at the start of the program. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. FULBRIGHT U.S. STUDENT COMPETITION: The Institute of International Education (IIE), in cooperation with the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, is pleased to announce the launch of the 2008-2009 Fulbright U.S. Student Program competition. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards approximately 1,300 grants annually and currently operates in 140 countries worldwide. Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships are now available in 26 countries. Fulbright grants generally provide funding for round-trip travel, maintenance for one academic year, health and accident coverage, and full or partial tuition. Charles E. Schell Foundation, Fifth/Third Bank, Trustee Interest-Free Loan

The College of Business is pleased to announce a financial assistance program for undergraduate majors who want to study abroad. Thanks to the generosity of the Charles E. Schell Foundation, Fifth Third Bank, Trustee, students meeting the following criteria will have the opportunity to apply for this interest-free loan to support study abroad. Students may borrow from $500 to $5,000 depending on the length and location of the study abroad experience. Selection Criteria : EMU College of Business students who are:

  • In good academic standing (i.e. minimum 2.0 G.P.A. on a 4.0 scale)
  • Between the ages of 18 to 25
  • Juniors (56-84 credits) and seniors (85+ credits)
  • US Citizens of Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, or adjoining states (Indiana, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia)
Priority will be given to
  • International Business (IB) majors
  • Those for whom, without financial assistance, the study abroad experience and completion of the program would not be possible
  • Those who have not already completed a study abroad experience
Application Details : To apply for a winter or spring/summer interest-free loan to study abroad, submit your application by November 14, 2008. To apply for a spring/summer or fall interest-free loan to study abroad, submit your application by January 30, 2009. EMU SCHOLARSHIPS - University scholarships are competitive and are awarded based on available funding. Meeting the minimum eligibility requirements does not ensure students will receive an award. Founder’s Award for EMU Honors College Students
The EMU Honors College Founder's Award is given annually, usually in the amount of $500 to support Honors student travel abroad for academic programs. It was established by the founder of the University Honors Program, Dr. Bob Holkeboer. Applications can be downloaded on the Honors College “Forms“ web page. Departmental Scholarships in Foreign Languages  (for applications contact EMU Dept. Of Foreign Languages and Bilingual Studies)

The J. Henry Owens Scholarship ($140) Applicants must be declared French majors hold a minimum 2.5 GPA overall and a minimum 3.0 overall in French. have successfully completed two courses in French at the 3 rd-year level by the end of the previous fall semester.    

The R. Clyde Ford Scholarship ($231) Applicants must be declared majors in a Foreign Language hold Senior standing at the time of application. While the donor has not indicated a minimum GPA, we give clear preference to the eligible student with the highest overall average. The possibility exists of combining both of these awards for a total of $342 if a candidate emerges who meets the separate criteria for both awards (as stipulated above).    

The Paul Adam Kozma Scholarship ($2,850)   Applicants must be in their Junior or Senior year, be declared majors in EMU's Language and International Trade (L.I.T.) Program, and be able to demonstrate financial need.   Preference will be given to L.I.T. majors concentrating in French; however, if no L.I.T/French candidate is found, the donor has authorized us to extend the award to L.I.T. majors with other language concentrations—German, Japanese, and Spanish.

John Hubbard Study Abroad Scholarship (approx. $519) Applicants must document the need for the financial aid by submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available online, by March 1st. fill out a scholarship application form, available in 219 Alexander write a letter in the foreign language stating your reasons for applying for study abroad.    

Marie Schulz Rhode Memorial Endowed Scholarship ($295) Applicants must plan to study abroad in an accredited program or language class in German, Austria, Switzerland or other German speaking courses a German Major or Minor taken at least one German course at EMU achieved junior status studying German at EMU GPA of at least 3.0 in all German courses at EMU and a2.5 GPA overall.

Florentine O. and Egbert R. Isbell Endowed Scholarship for German (approx. $1,287)   Applications Students interested in any of these scholarships should complete the enclosed application and return it to the Department of Foreign Languages and Bilingual Studies, 219 Alexander Building, Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, MI 48197. The deadline for applications for currently enrolled or returning students is March 1 . Awards are announced in April.


The Meta Hellwig Undergraduate Special Study Scholarships 

Awards of up to $500 for EMU Biology or Elementary Science Majors, including EMU Biology graduate students. The award is intended to help defray expenses associated with field or laboratory biology courses sponsored by certified institutions of higher learning, including field courses taken in foreign countries. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program This US government sponsored scholarship awards undergraduate students up to $5000 for study abroad programs that are eligible for credit at the student's home institution. Applicants must be US citizens in good standing at a two or four year institution of higher education in the United States and must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the academic term of their application. Applications are due March 15 for the academic year and fall and October 1 for spring (EMU's winter semester). Summer programs are not eligible. Japan Center for Michigan Universities Scholarships JCMU has several scholarships available for the summer, semester, and academic year programs at the Japan Center in Hikone, where students study Japanese language and culture. No prior language experience is necessary. Freeman Awards for Study in Asia The Freeman Foundation awards scholarships to promote first hand knowledge of the countries, languages, and cultures of East and Southeast Asia. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents who are enrolled as undergraduates at accredited US colleges or universities. Applicants must currently receive financial aid or have verifiable need for financial assistance. Priority is given to students who demonstrate the most need. Upon return, students must submit a report and are expected to spend some time promoting study abroad in Asia on their home campus and in their community. The application deadline for the summer is March 1, for the fall/academic year April 1, and for winter/spring, November 1. Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships These highly competitive scholarships are sponsored by the National Rotary Club. All awards fund study abroad programs in the country selected by the applicant. The Academic Year Ambassadorial Scholarships provide a flat grant of $23,000 for a full academic year (two semesters or equivalent). Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships of approximately $12,000 per year are awarded for two years of specific degree-oriented study abroad. Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships of $10,000-15,000 are awarded for three or six months of intensive language study and cultural immersion in another country. Applicants for any of these scholarships must have completed at least two years of college or university coursework when the scholarship begins. Application deadlines range from March to July for programs taking place not during the upcoming year, but the year following (i.e., as much as 18 months in the future). Advance planning is key! National Security Education Program (NSEP) The NSEP awards are for undergraduates and graduates planning to study in regions outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. NSEP will give some preference to applicants who are proposing study in fields underrepresented in study abroad (science, business, health, education, engineering, mathematics) and who demonstrate a strong and direct connection between their future goals and their chosen purpose for studying abroad. The NSEP scholarship focuses on geographical areas, languages, and fields of study that are considered important to U.S. national security. Freshman and sophomores are eligible for funding to support a summer or semester program; juniors and seniors, a semester or year program. Graduating seniors and graduate students may apply for graduate enhancement fellowships, which enable students to add an international dimension to their curriculum. The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi The Undergraduate Internship and Study Abroad Grant Competition offers $1000 for either an internship or an academic study abroad program. Both Phi Kappa Phi members and non-members may apply as long as they are enrolled at an institution that has an active Phi Kappa Phi chapter (which includes EMU). Applicants must have earned at least 30 credit hours of academic credit but no more than 90 credit hours. The applicant's academic GPA must be at east 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must have at least two semesters remaining in residence at their home institution after completing their study abroad experience. For more details, please go to www.phikappaphi.org .

John E. Bowman Travel Grants These grants cover airfare for undergraduate students attending CIEE member institutions (EMU is a member) to study in non-traditional destinations- anywhere outside Western Europe, Australia/New Zealand, and Canada. Preference is given to applicants wishing to participate in a program that focuses on enhancing language skills or cultural understanding. Financial need and the relevance of the program to future academic or career goals are also considered. The application deadline for summer, fall and academic year programs is April 1. Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals

This program is a one-year study/internship exchange program that is funded by both the US Congress and the German Bundestag. The exchange consists of a two-month intensive language program, four months of professional schooling at a German University of Allied Sciences, and a five-month internship with a German company. Candidates must be US citizens or permanent residents and 18-24 years old at the start of the program. Preference is given to candidates pursuing practical careers in business, technical, vocational, or agricultural fields. Funding covers most costs, with the participant being responsible for living expenses during the internship portion of the program, as well as entertainment and personal expenses throughout the program. This center doesn't provide scholarships itself but has a portion of their web site dedicated to links for various funding sources for study abroad. Go to http://www.umabroad.umn.edu/financial/scholarships/ where you will be prompted for the region of the world where you plan to study and other information. The results will likely include some of the above scholarships, as well as others for which you may be eligible.
