Health and safety

Safety and security for participants of EMU study abroad programs is our first and most fundamental priority. We regularly monitor the safety and security conditions of our study abroad sites and itineraries, using U.S. State Department information along with other reliable sources.

On the basis of this information, our intention at this time is to proceed with the programs described on our website. If conditions change and the University decides to cancel a specific program prior to its departure, students enrolled in that program will receive a full refund of all fees paid.

If a program already underway must be canceled, the University will arrange to have all students enrolled in the program return home and will issue appropriate refunds to enrolled students.

If a program is not canceled and conditions warrant, we have the ability to alter the scheduled destinations and itineraries of specific programs to maximize safety and security. If a student wishes to withdraw from a program that is not canceled by the University, i.e. a program that is proceeding as scheduled or modified by changing conditions, the normal policy regarding withdrawals will be in effect.

As we continue to monitor safety and security conditions for each of our programs, we will provide updated information to students. Please contact the Office of Academic Programs Abroad if you have questions.

We subscribe to the principles of "Responsible Study Abroad: Health and Safety Guidelines" written by the SECUSSA Committee on Health and Safety and supported by NAFSA: Association of International Educators and other professional organizations dedicated to international education.

We endeavor to follow the Guidelines for Program Sponsors in Section I of the document. Further, we call on all participants in our programs to follow the Responsibilities for Participants in Section II, and we urge all parents/guardians/families of participants to follow the Recommendations in Section III:
