JEAN S. VIDICAN …………………………………AUSTRALIA STORY

Jean in Australia

Think about a place where you have to travel half way around the world to reach. On the surface you think it is the same as the US, but longer you stay, it unfolds as a culture vastly different than your own. Yes, you've guessed it: AUSTRALIA.

I was given that opportunity to study in Australia through EMU's Programs Abroad Semester Affiliated Program. This was a wonderful opportunity to get away and experience a new culture as well as continue earning credit toward my education in my Telecommunication and Film degree. I chose to study abroad in Australia because I wanted to travel to a country that was English-speaking and had a warm climate. I have always had the desire to travel since early childhood, knowing that I wanted to experience more of the world than our isolated Western hemisphere.

Cross at Sunrise

I spent four months studying at Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia. I spent two more months of traveling to the cities of Adelaide, Melbourne, Cairns, down the coast to Brisbane and Sydney, and also New Zealand. This experience really shaped my perceptions of the world and my view of my own country, now that I was able to take a step back and really see what it was like. Studying at Curtin has been one of the best experiences of my life. Not only was the campus beautiful and the extracurricular activities plentiful, I made some of the best friends ever who live around the world. Now I have contacts for my future travels from Japan to England!

Surf's Up!

While you are still a student, I would suggest that you take the opportunity to study in Australia and experience that great Aussie culture (footy, barbeque on the beach, Vegemite, etc…) You must go to know what I'm talking about. When you do make that 36 hour journey around the world to the beautiful down under, go with an open mind and a willing heart to accept the adventure that will await you; one that you will remember for a life-time!
