The Students With Disabilities Office (SWD) provides accommodations for students with disabilities and assists faculty and staff with the implementation of those accommodations. In addition to accommodating students with disabilities, SWD provides technical assistance, consultation, and training to units across campus and organizations in the community regarding the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Disability Awareness, Inclusion, and Accessibility.
Effective July 1, 2008 the name of the Access Services Office changed to the Students with Disabilities Office (SWD). This name change was prompted by several factors:
The Students with Disabilities Office has developed a new guide for students with disabilities. The booklet overviews the purpose, resources available and services that the SWD Office offers. The booklet can be picked up in room 240K of the EMU Student Center or it can be downloaded here:

A new director of the Students with Disabilities Office was announced on June 25, 2008. The new director is Dr. Caroline Brackette. Dr. Brackette has three degrees from the University of Toledo (UT) including her Ph.D. in Counselor Education. She was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Counselor Education at the University of Memphis. She has worked as a disability specialist at UT and a counselor/administrator in the Toledo Public Schools. Her experience, vision, collaborative spirit and passion for opportunities for students with disabilities in higher education led us to this choice.
We look forward to working with Dr. Brackette and the SWD Office staff in providing service for students with disabilities at EMU. Dr. Brackette will be available after July 14, 2008 at 734.487.2470 or by email at cbracke1@emich.edu. Please welcome her.
We were all shocked by the untimely death last winter of Don Anderson who was the Director of Access Services at EMU. Everyday we appreciate Don's longstanding commitment to our students with disabilities.
Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the EMU Foundation at The EMU Foundation or by mail at 1349 South Huron, Ypsilanti, MI 48197. Designate your contribution to the Donald Anderson Memorial Fund (Account #01561). EMU plans to use all contributions to construct a campus memorial rest stop for those with mobility impairments near the EMU Student Center.
Please sign our guest book in memory of Don Anderson.
