As EMU is the only state university not granted
a state capital outlay improvement project in
the last decade, renovations to the Pray-Harrold
and Strong Hall facilities are essential for
Eastern Michigan University to catch up to the
capital resources of its peer institutions
and to continue to provide students with
a quality environment in which to learn.
A formal request for state support to renovate
Strong Hall will be submitted to the legislature
following the expected approval of the Pray-Harrold
renovation project. Current projections are
for a program statement to be ready for submission
by the summer/fall of 2007.
Built in 1957, Strong Hall is home of the geography,
geology, physics, and astronomy departments. Following
the completion of the Mark Jefferson Science
Complex, Strong Hall will be physically connected
to the Mark Jefferson building to promote and
enhance teaching and research in the natural
sciences.
While still in the early planning phase, the
Strong Hall revitalization project is expected
to add approximately 6,000 net square feet. While
the overall structure of the building is in
excellent condition, all building systems are
also in need of replacement.
The total cost of the Strong Hall revitalization
is currently projected at approximately $30
million.
