A Musical Crash Course on Special Education - A Saturday Sampler

The rising numbers of special needs students in today's schools require that music educators and therapists be knowledgeable of laws, vernacular, available resources and strategies that work with these populations. Join us for a morning of dialogue and music making relavant to this topic with clinician Angie Snell, MT-BC from the Monroe County Intermediate School District. High school wind and percussion clinic day

EMU wind and percussion faculty offer instrument-specific clinics for high school musicians in grades 10-12. The day includes clinics, faculty recital, dinner, an opportunity to audition for the 2009 EMU High School Honors Band and admission to Bandorama. Advanced registration and $30 participant fee required: 734.487.1430. Alexander Music Building, all day.

The Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band and Marching Band take the stage in a colorful and exhilarating display of pageantry and sound led by Director of Bands Mary Schneider and Associate Director of Bands John Zastoupil. History of the Keyboard, Part I

James Wagner plays music from the ages for organ, harpsichord, clavichord, and piano. This concert is presented in support of EMU's All-Steinway School Initiative. Organ Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m.

Bob Becker, percussion clinic and master class

One of the world’s premier virtuoso performers on the xylophone and marimba, Bob Becker presents a clinic and master class for percussionists. Becker holds degrees from Eastman School of Music and is a founding member of the multicultural percussion ensemble NEXUS. Alexander Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m.

Remeleixo

Remeleixo (pronounced Reh-meh-lay-show) is a Portuguese word meaning style or finesse. It is often used when speaking about someone who dances with particular grace and elegance. This exciting new duo possesses all the attributes this unique word imparts. The duo is comprised of guitarist Pablo Cohen and soprano saxophonist Steven Mauk. Both are professors of music at Ithaca College in New York. The ensemble performs repertoire ranging from Baroque to Contemporary periods, and specializes in the music of South America. Alexander Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m.

The mission of the Friends is to showcase the finest chamber music talent, offer concerts in the acoustically superb Pease Auditorium, and to make these concerts free to all who wish to attend. Student ensembles, directed by Mark Pappas, present a diverse program of jazz standards and new charts in a two part concert series tonight and Saturday afternoon. Alexander Recital Hall, 7 p.m.

The Dance program and Symphony Orchestra present selections from Delibes' comic ballet Coppelia, in two identical one-hour programs especially for youth in grades one through eight. Free admission, but reservations are required: 734.487.2448. Pease, 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.

Dance majors, directed by Sherry Jerome, and the Symphony Orchestra, directed by Kevin Miller present Leo Delibes’ ballet Coppelia. This comic story includes love, mistaken identity, and a mysterious, lonely doctor. Admission: $10 adults, $8 students and seniors, $6 children under 12. Instrumental music educators are invited to attend EMU’s First Annual Wind Conducting Symposium with guest clinician Richard Floyd, State Director of Music at the University of Texas at Austin. Adoration and Praise

Join the EMU Chamber Choir and University Choir for a unique look at music of the church. The choirs will perform fragments of the Mass representing diverse cultures and styles in the first portion of the concert and songs from the Gospel and Spiritual tradition during the second part. Featured will be selections from the Caribbean Mass, Missa Criollis, Missa Kenya, and the Gospel Mass. Pease, 4 p.m.

Collegium Musicum

Scott Elsholz leads the Collegium Musicum in a program inspired by one of the most beloved of the Marian canticles: The Magnificat. Selections include Giovanni Pergolesi's Magnificat, Johann Kaspar Kerll's alternatim plainchant setting of the Magnificat primi toni, Arcangelo Corelli's “Christmas Concerto" and J. S. Bach’s Cantata 10, Meine Seele erhebt den Herrn. Holy Trinity Student Chapel, 7:30 p.m.
