MSN in Adult Health Nursing

The School of Nursing offers the following graduate education opportunities:

  1. Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Adult Health Nursing (40-43 credits) with an option to take additional clinical hours and an Advanced Pharmacology course to be eligible to take the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) certification examination (4 additional credits)
  2. Two Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Programs
    1. Teaching in Health Care Systems (12 Credits).
    2. Quality Improvement in Health Care (12 Credits).
  3. Combining the MSN with a Certificate (requires two separate applications and separate fees).

Accreditation
In 2002, Eastern Michigan University's graduate programs in nursing received a 10 year full accreditation from the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)

Master of Science in Nursing
Nurses will gain advanced practice skills and knowledge of health care systems and research. You will select one concentration from courses in teaching in health care systems, quality improvement (QI) in health care, or gerontology. The program includes 3 adult heath nursing courses with a practicum component. An additional 275-hour clinical practicum plus advanced pharmacology are available to those who wish to prepare for the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Clinical Specialist (CNS) certification examination. Students work with master's prepared preceptors in health care agencies and settings related to their interests. Courses are held in the evening at selected EMU locations.

Total: 40 to 44 credit hours.

Elective Courses (3 to 4 credits minimum)
Courses may be selected from nursing, physiology, psychology, sociology, gerontology, education or business management. These course credits are chosen to help meet the student's career goals. Credit hours may be taken prior to admission to the program.

Role Concentration Options (students must select on of the 3 options to complete the program) (12-13 credit hours)

1. Teaching in Health Care Systems
This 12 credit hour program develops skills in curriculum development, teaching strategies, and curriculum evaluation. This certificate is designed for nurses with a bachelor degree. These can also lead to a certification in Teaching in Health Care Systems, with a separate application.

2. Quality Improvement in Health Care
This 12 credit hour program of study develops skills in quality improvement with emphasis on outcome measurement and process improvement. This graduate certificate is designed for performance improvement coordinators, risk management personnel, education coordinators, managers, and staff in health care facilities. These courses can also lead to a graduate certificate in Quality Improvement with a separate application.

There are 9 required credits:

The remaining 3 credits can be selected from the following list of program electives:

3. Gerontology
This 13 credit hour program of study is designed as a collaboration between the School of Nursing and the Interdisciplinary Gerontology Program to promote advanced knowledge and care to clients.

Admission Requirements for Master of Science in Nursing
To apply to the graduate nursing program you must first complete an application for admissions to Eastern Michigan University. Available at: http://www.emich.edu/admissions.

  1. Satisfy Graduate School's admission requirements.
  2. Possess a BSN degree from a CCNE or NLN-accredited nursing program OR R. N. licensure with another bachelor's degree.
  3. Have at least a 3.0 GPA. (Applicants may seek conditional admission with a GPA of 2.75)
  4. International students must have a minimum score of 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or 80 on the Michigan English Language Ability Battery (MELAB).
  5. Submit a sample of your writing (four to five pages suggested). The sample could be a published article, term paper, or a new composition, demonstrating ability to use peer reviewed literature to support ideas.
  6. Have a current license to practice as a professional nurse in Michigan, or eligibility to obtain a license.
  7. Submit three references that document professional competence in nursing practice.
  8. Submit a two-to-three-page narrative statement of personal goals for graduate study and future career.
  9. Have successfully completed an approved basic statistics course that includes descriptive and inferential statistics, with a grade of B or better.
  10. Have successfully completed a basic health assessment course.
  11. Select program: NUR/MSN-HH on application form.

Requirements for Admission for the Teaching Certificate

  1. Satisfy Graduate School admission requirements.
  2. Select Graduate Certificate Program: HCS/CTHC-HH
  3. Minimum GPA of 2.5

Requirements for Admission for the Quality Improvement Certificate

  1. Satisfy Graduate School admission requirements.
  2. Select Graduate Certificate Program: CQI/CT-HH
  3. Minimum GPA of 2.5

Requirements for Admission for BOTH MSN and Certificate

  1. Complete TWO separate applications
  2. Meet requirements for BOTH separate applications
