The Eastern Michigan University Police Department began in 1963
as a night watchman service. Today, EMU PD is a professional
police department with full law enforcement capabilities. EMU
PD is located on the lower level of the parking structure adjacent
to Bowen Field House and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a
week, to serve the needs of the campus community. The department
is comprised of 17 Police Officers, one crime prevention officer,
four full time dispatchers, four sergeants and three administrators.
All police officers are certified through the Michigan Commission
of Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). The officers are sworn
by the Eastern Michigan Board
of Regents pursuant to Public Act 120 and also by the Ypsilanti City Police
Department, thereby allowing them to enforce city ordinances as well as state
laws. As sworn officers they are empowered to investigate, arrest or take
other necessary action to address any criminal or other public infraction
in the vicinity of the EMU campus. EMU PD officers work very closely with
all area agencies including the Michigan State Police and the Washtenaw County
Sheriff Department.
The EMU Police Department is committed to providing courtesy
and excellence to the campus community. While we can promise
you a committed effort to ensure your safety, we are of course
unable to promise total isolation from crime. Therefore it is
important that each of you take responsibility for your own safety.
The key to preventing crime is awareness, which is best achieved
through education. Please take time to read through this web
site and familiarize yourself with the programs and activities
we offer. Educate yourself about what you can do personally to
make your campus a safer place. If you have any questions concerning
your safety at EMU, please do not hesitate to call us at (734)
487-1222. We are here to assist and protect you. Together we
can combat crime successfully.
