Employment

It is difficult to tell when a job opening will occur here at the EMU Police Department. However, you can check with Eastern Michigan University's Human Resources Department for current openings .

What does a Campus Police Officer do?

University Police Officers perform a variety of tasks during a typical tour of duty. They are assigned to patrol the campus either by foot, patrol car, or mountain bike while also performing these and other duties:

Respond to complaints and other calls for service, and take appropriate action to resolve them.

Take police reports, and follow up on them when appropriate.

Investigate violations of State statutes and University regulations.

Arrest those found in violation of State laws.

Issue citations for parking and traffic violations.

Campus policing is not much different than city policing. Eastern Michigan University has approximately 25,000 people on campus during the school year. That includes faculty, staff, students, and visitors. The university has 13 Residence halls and four apartment complexes.

Minimum Requirements:
Be certified or certifiable (pre-service graduate of police academy) by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) to work as a police officer in the State of Michigan.
Be a U.S. citizen.
Possess a valid Michigan operator's license.
Possess the ability to perform the duties of a Police Officer
Possess good moral character.
Have no Felony convictions.
Have a good driving record.

Selection Process
Application:
Send a letter of application and a resume to the Human resources department. See Human Resources to get an application.

Interview:
Applicants selected for an interview will be notified by mail. Interviews will be conducted by police department members as well as representatives of EMU students, faculty, and staff.

Personal Questionnaire / Information Release Waiver.
A personal questionnaire and release of information waivers will be sent to applicants selected for interviews. The forms must be completed and brought with the applicant to the interview.

Background investigation
A comprehensive background investigation will be conducted.

Selection
The Police Department recommends applicant (s) selected to EMU Human Resources for approval.

Conditional Offer
After approval by human resources, a conditional offer of employment is made to the applicant. Applicant must pass medical, drug, and psychological screenings to be hired.

Probation
Once hired a new officer is on probation for one year. Newly hired officers are also required to go through a sixteen week Field Training Program.
