Previous day's EMU
Today
MONDAY, JULY 6
NOTES
AND QUOTES
Note: On this date in 1854, the Republican Party’s
first official meeting formed in Jackson, Michigan.
Fact: The Republican Party was originated in Ripon, Wisconsin,
by anti-slavery activists and modernizers who believed that
government should grant western lands to settlers free of
charge.
SPECIAL
NOTICE
ANN STREET LOT CLOSED: Since July 3, the
Ann Street Lot has been closed for a reconstruction project.
Ann Street Lot is anticipated to reopen in mid-August.
Signage will be in place directing traffic away from the
construction area. For more information, contact Travis Temeyer,
487-3427.
SHIRLEY OESTRIKE MEMORIAL SERVICE: Shirley Oestrike, an
EMU employee from 1974-1992 (she was a secretary when she
retired) and wife of former EMU baseball coach Ron Oestrike,
died June 28. She was 76. A memorial service to celebrate
Shirley's life will take place Thursday, July 9, 11 a.m.,
at the First United Methodist Church of Ypsilanti, located
at 209 Washtenaw Avenue. Visitation will take place at the
church Wednesday, July 8, 5-8 p.m., and from 10 a.m. until
the time of service Thursday, July 9. In lieu of flowers,
memorial contributions may be made to either the Ypsilanti
United Methodist Women's Organization or the Ypsilanti Senior

TODAY
HALLE LIBRARY HOLIDAY SCHEDULE: The Bruce T. Halle Library
will have the following schedule in observance of the July
4th holiday: Friday, July 3, through Sunday, July
5, closed. The library will resume regular summer hours
today, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information,
contact Mary Murphy at mmurphy@emich.edu
SITEWORK TO IMPACT MARK JEFFERSON SOUTHEAST STAIRWELL: The
sitework contractor for the Mark Jefferson Science Center
will continue installation of a storm manhole and pipe in
the sidewalk area outside the southeast stairwell of Mark
Jefferson. Since this work is outside the construction fence,
it will require barricading portions of the sidewalk in the
construction work area. Barricades also will shut off access
to the southeast stair tower exterior doors. As a result,
emergency exiting from the first floor stairwell will be
temporarily directed into the east lobby of Mark Jefferson
and out of the building via the courtyard area doors. Emergency
exit signs and directional signs will be posted at the barricades,
in the stairwell and at the lobby. The entrance at the northeast
corner of the Terrestrial and Aquatics Building (greenhouse)
will remain open and accessible. This sitework should be
completed by TODAY, and all the areas will be restored.
For more information, contact Rick Gould, project manager,
(216) 978-6736.
VALVE ASSEMBLY INSTALLATION ADJACENT TO MCKENNY HALL: The
sitework contractor for the Mark Jefferson Science Complex
plans to install a double check valve for the Ypsilanti Community
Utilities Authority in the sidewalk and lawn areas northwest
of McKenny Hall, beginning today. Work will occur during
normal workday hours. Water service to the Terrestrial and
Aquatics Building (greenhouse) and Briggs Hall will be shut
down during the week of June 29th for approximately a two-day
period. Specific days will be identified in advance via a
separate notification. The sidewalk and affected portions
of the lawn area will be barricaded by the contractor to
isolate pedestrian traffic from the work area. This will
require detours for pedestrians approaching from the north
(the Mark Jefferson courtyard) and from the south (Washtenaw
Avenue and the McKenny lots). Pedestrian detour and directional
signs will be posted. The plan is for the entire affected
area to be restored and reopened by TODAY. For more
information, contact Rick Gould, project manager, (216) 978-6736.
STORM WATER DETENTION WORK AT SOUTH OAKWOOD LOT: The sitework
contractor for the Mark Jefferson Science Complex will continue
installation of the storm water detention system in the South
Oakwood Parking Lot. To safely install the new storm water
detention system, the contractor will install a temporary
barricade to separate the parking area at the north end of
the lot from the construction area. The South Oakwood Lot
parking entrance and exit off West Circle Drive will remain
open and accessible. Construction traffic access to the South
Oakwood Lot will be limited to the south entrance/exit. Signage,
barricades and flagmen will be employed to help direct traffic
and assure that non-construction vehicles do not enter the
construction area where the storm water detention work is
taking place. This work is expected to be completed by TODAY.
For more information, contact Rick Gould, project manager,
(216) 978-6736.

provost and executive vice president. Find out the details.
U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis led a panel discussion
about plans for automotive recovery in the state. Read about
more federal aid designated to Michigan and how EMU is helping
retrain workers. Eastern Michigan biology, and geography
and geology faculty are working together to help the Detroit
River International Wildlife Refuge handle an invasive species
there. Discover what those faculty are doing. And this week's "Why
I" feature works in the physical plant. Guess who it
is. For these and many other stories, be sure to check out

TEMPORARY PARTIAL LOT CLOSURE: The southern half of the
Oakwood South Lot will be closed until Tuesday, July 7, for
work associated with the Mark Jefferson project. Thank you
for your patience. For information, call parking 487-3450.
PORTER ELEVATOR SHUTDOWN: Eastern’s physical plant
has reported that the elevator in the Porter Building (College
of Education) is shut down due to a hole in its hydraulic
jack. The repairs will be done as quickly as possibly.
However, it most likely will take through the end of July
to complete the job. The delay is due to a special part that
is needed.
Although the first and second floors in Porter are accessible
through exterior entrances, the third floor will only be
accessible by stairs. Spring and summer classes that need
accommodations for students or faculty have been or will
be relocated. Required technology has been relocated to the
second floor. Minimal office space for faculty-student conferences
also will be available.
We apologize for the inconvenience and will keep the campus
updated on any changes. For further information, please call
Sylvia Bethea at 487-6567 or e-mail sbethea@emich.edu.

of departments that are available
to eligible students through Sept. 30. The program is called
the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) and EMU is proud
to partner with Washtenaw County in making these job opportunities
available to eligible students.
Eligibility guidelines and general information about the program are available
